New Mullingar Green Cert course to begin at Teagasc

Teagasc Mullingar is inviting farmers and those planning to enter the agricultural sector to enrol in a new Distance Green Cert programme commencing this November.

The programme will provide an opportunity for students to gain the knowledge and practical skills required to develop their careers in agriculture, while allowing them to continue with their existing farming or work commitments.

Classes will be delivered through a combination of learning at the Teagasc Office in Mullingar, Ballyhaise College and the Teagasc Grange Research Centre. Students will combine classroom-based learning with practical experience, giving them the opportunity to put their learning into practice in real farming situations.

The course covers a broad range of subjects relevant to modern Irish farming, including beef production, sheep production, grassland management, the environment, communication skills and farm business management.

Particular emphasis will also be placed on practical farm management and the use of modern farm technology. Students will gain experience using systems such as ICBF, PastureBase and e-Profit Monitor, helping them to make informed decisions around grassland management, livestock performance, farm planning and financial performance.

The programme will also provide students with access to Teagasc specialists, as well as advice on areas such as farm succession planning. Students will have the opportunity to participate in farm discussion groups at Grange Research Centre and gain exposure to the research herd and current developments in Irish agricultural production.

For those looking to establish themselves in farming, obtaining a Green Cert can be an important step in progressing their plans. Completion of the qualification can provide access to a range of Department of Agriculture supports, subject to the relevant eligibility requirements. These can include National Reserve and Young Farmer Top-Up payments, increased investment support through TAMS, and a range of tax incentives associated with becoming a trained young farmer or transferring a family farm.

The course is designed to cater for people from different educational and farming backgrounds. A Distance Learning route is available as an accelerated option for applicants aged 23 or over who already hold a Level 6 or higher non-agricultural qualification.

The programme is particularly suited to people who want to gain an agricultural qualification while remaining involved in their own farm, employment or other commitments.
