Breda McHugh, winner of the Unsung Hero category, receives her prize from Matt O’Connor, Mullingar Park Hotel, sponsor.

Breda’s can-do spirit means she is always ready to lend a hand

Westmeath Examiner Community and Sports Awards

The Unsung Hero category is for people who work behind the scenes, frequently without praise, and not seeking it either, and each of the three years of the Westmeath Examiner Community and Sports Awards, it is among those that receive most nominations.

It is clear that the people of north Westmeath are keen to recognise the work of the unsung heroes in their communities.

This year’s winner is Breda McHugh.

The community of Delvin would be lost without Breda’s can-do spirit and ability to always lend a hand.

Wherever she can, Breda will help in committees and fundraisers, and she also enjoys golf when she allows herself a free minute.

Every year, Breda helps organise the Delvin Christmas lights, St Patrick’s Day parade and helps with raising funds for Delvin Hospice Home Care and for LARCC.

For the last five years, Breda has organised a fundraising golf classic at Shay Murtagh’s private golf course in Raharney, in aid of the Delvin Hospice Home Care and LARCC.

Over those years, the classic has raised more than €50,000, Breda told the audience at the Westmeath Examiner Community and Sports Awards as she accepted her prize last week.

Breda displays an admirable humility, and always makes sure to thank everyone around her.

She never sings her own praises, and that is just one of the many reasons she is the deserving recipient of the Unsung Hero Award.
