The Columba College, Killucan annual End-of-Year Awards Ceremony on May 14 was an evening dedicated to celebrating the achievements, commitment, and talents of its student body.
Held in the assembly hall, the ceremony was attended by a large and supportive audience of students, parents, staff, and extended family members, all gathered to honour the efforts of students over the last academic year.
The event commenced with an address from principal Dermot Brady, who warmly welcomed all attendees and commended the student community for their dedication, resilience, and spirit.
Mr Brady reflected on the school’s continued commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where every student is encouraged to strive for their best, both academically and personally.
Mr Conroy presided on the night and under his direction, 81 awards were presented, following more than 120 nominations submitted by staff – evidence of the breadth of talent and accomplishment in the student body.
The awards spanned a variety of categories. Subject-specific awards were presented by individual teachers to students from both the Junior and Senior Cycle, recognising excellence, progress, and commitment across all curricular areas. The awards highlighted high achievement and also consistent effort and a positive attitude toward learning.
Attendance Awards were also a key feature of the ceremony, recognising students who maintained excellent or full attendance throughout the year, a reflection of their dedication, punctuality, and personal responsibility.
In recognition of the school’s vibrant extracurricular life, awards were presented for outstanding involvement and achievement in sports including soccer, hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, and badminton.
This year also saw the introduction of a new accolade: the Outstanding Achievement in Sport award, which honoured students who achieved significant success at a national level, underscoring the school’s commitment to supporting and celebrating excellence in all arenas of student life.
The arts were represented with the Performer of the Year award, presented to a student who delivered an exceptional performance in the school’s production of Guys and Dolls. That award paid tribute to the thriving creative and performing arts culture at Columba College.
Each year group was also recognised with three important awards: Class Spirit, Progress, and Student of the Year. Those honours celebrated students who demonstrated leadership, personal growth, community contribution, and a commitment to excellence within their peer groups.
The final part of the ceremony was reserved for the most prestigious awards. The Transition Year Blossom Award recognised a TY student who had demonstrated outstanding development, initiative, and participation.
The Junior Student of the Year and Senior Student of the Year awards honoured students whose overall contributions to school life, academics, and leadership were truly exemplary.
The highlight of the night was the presentation of the Confucius Award – a distinguished honour given to a student who embodies the core values of wisdom, respect, diligence, and cultural appreciation. It reflects the ethos of Columba College and the school’s dedication to nurturing global-minded, respectful, and conscientious young people.
The awards night was a clear success; it celebrated the hard work and dedication of its students and reinforced the school mission to recognise and nurture the potential of every individual.
