Family 'giving something back' via tractor run
A strong community spirit and a passion for giving back were on full display in Killucan on Sunday as locals gathered for the first Killucan tractor run in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital and Mullingar Hospital Paediatric Unit.
Despite the rainy weather, tractors, bikes, and supporters arrived at Killucan GAA from early morning. Registration opened at 10am, and the run started at midday.
The run was organised by a local group who had long hoped to bring the event to life. One of the organisers, Shane Dixon, explained that the motivation behind the fundraiser was deeply personal.
His son, Dylan Dixon, had been attending Crumlin Children’s Hospital for 13 years, struggling with arthritis. “We wanted to give something back,” Shane said. “We’ve talked about doing a tractor run for years. We go to a lot of them, so we said we’d try it ourselves this year.”
The route took drivers from Killucan GAA through Raharney, across to the Delvin road, and looped back to the starting point.
The day didn’t end with the run either, as in addition to the main event, attendees enjoyed a raffle, an auction, and a special appearance from Santa, who arrived in style on an American truck, adding to the excitement.
The tractor run served not only as a community gathering but also as a heartfelt show of gratitude to the hospitals that continue to support families.
