Minister Troy welcomes progress on Kinnegad Park and Ride facility

The National Transport Authority (NTA) that €50,000 in funding has been allocated to progressing plans for a new Park and Ride Facility near Kinnegad.

The funding follows an application submitted by Westmeath County Council in late July to advance proposals for a bus-based Park and Ride facility on the outskirts of the town.

In correspondence to Minister Troy, the NTA confirmed that funding has been provided to undertake survey work and prepare an options assessment report, with this preparatory work now underway.

Minister Robert Troy welcomed the news saying, ““A Park and Ride facility would be a very welcome development for Kinnegad, helping to address congestion in the town centre while improving access to public transport for people living in the wider area.

“At present, commuters travelling to Dublin and elsewhere for work often leave their cars parked in Kinnegad throughout the day. By providing a dedicated facility on the outskirts of the town would help remove these long-stay vehicles from the town centre, freeing up valuable parking spaces for residents, shoppers and visitors, and supporting local businesses.

“It would also make it easier for commuters from Kinnegad and the surrounding areas to access public transport, providing a more convenient alternative to driving for their daily commute.

“The development of affordable Park and Ride facilities on the outskirts of major towns is a key commitment in the Programme for Government, and I am pleased to see progress being made on proposals for Kinnegad.

“This funding represents an important first step in progressing the project, and I look forward to seeing the outcome of the preparatory work and the proposals for the facility advance.”
