Streete and District Notes
Sincere sympathy to the extended family of the late Iggy Fulham, Rathowen who died at a very young age following an illness bravely borne. Iggy"s funeral took place following Mass in Rathowen last week. Iggy will always be remembered for his great interest in football and the time given to training and encouraging the youth. May he rest in peace.ReaderThe reader this week is as per the readers" rota.MassMass in Boherquill at 8.00p.m. this Saturday is in memory of the late Jack Carthy, Lisryan.RamblersBoherquill Ramblers take their Summer Break for August and walks will resume in September on the first Sunday. As mentioned last week the group had a visit from Kilcormack Ramblers who walked with the Boherquill group in Multyfarnham and attended the outdoor dance in Portiuncula Nursing Home where all were entertained by the famous Tulla Céilí Band. John Noel and Sarah Anne McGivney treated all to tea, sandwiches and goodies as well as refreshments for which a sincere thanks is extended. Most did a tour of the Nursing Home and needless to say were very impressed. It was also lovely to have a chat with many of the residents. The Kilcormack Club ended the evening with a meal in Feerick"s Hotel, Rathowen where some of their members played music. They all went home very impressed with North Westmeath and have invited us to once again visit them. The writer has had a request from a group of German ladies to walk with them in September when they stay in the area and a group from Belfast city have confirmed that they are coming for four days in October. Why not have a look at our website www.irelandwalking.ie or better still join our club as it only costs €20 per year. The location for the 2008 outing was the west of Ireland with a most enjoyable few days in County Galway. A group of about 40 people from the Edgeworthstown, Rathowen, Streete and Granard area headed off early on Sunday morning, July 13th in one of Donnelly"s finest coaches with the one and only John O"Reilly at the helm. Yet again John treated his passengers to a most comfortable journey interspersed with chat, music and plenty of interesting information about the towns and areas visited. The first stop on the journey was at the Dartfield Museum and Equestrian Park located between Kilreekill and Loughrea. Here the group learned all about the evolution of the horse, viewed a display of carriages from days gone by and enjoyed light refreshments at the café. It was then on to the final destination and what was to be home to the group for the next few days - the Salthill Hotel in Salthill. Following the evening meal there the group relaxed and had an early night in preparation for the next day. After a tasty breakfast on Monday, July 14th the group took a trip to Moycullen to visit the Marble Workshop where they learned how the famous Connemara marble is finished. There was also an opportunity to buy some souvenirs before heading out to Connemara, passing through such famous locations as Oughterard and Maam Cross. There was also a stop at Leenane - made famous in the news last year following the collapse of the bridge. A temporary bridge is currently in place at the edge of Killary Harbour (Ireland"s only fjord). After taking in the beautiful views here it was on to Kylemore Abbey. Built in 1868 the Abbey is home to the Benedictine nuns and includes a world famous boarding school and day school for girls. There is also a beautiful garden, craft shop, pottery and tea-rooms. After the visit to Kylemore John took the group back to Salthill via the Inagh Valley so that they could catch a glimpse of marble quarries and their unique green colour. He also showed the group the location of both Radio na Gaeltachta and TG4 en route. After dinner at the hotel there was music and entertainment before going to bed.Day three of the tour included a trip to Cong beside the famous Ashford Castle and most noted as the village in the movie 'The Quiet Man'. After the visit to Cong it was on to Galway city for a spot of shopping before returning to Salthill in the evening for dinner and more entertainment. The last day of the tour included a visit to the Knock shrine where the group were able to attend Mass. They also got a chance to visit Knock airport near Charlestown. A very tasty evening meal was enjoyed by the group at into the West near Frenchpark which was the last stop before returning home.Once again great credit is due to Nell Campbell for organising such an enjoyable and interesting tour and to John O"Reilly for bringing everyone safely to and from their destination and for imparting his wealth of local knowledge along the way.
