Sunday last was Ladies' Ulster Bank Christmas Hamper day at Mullingar Golf Club, and with the excellent conditions and reasonable weather there was a fine turn out.

The club matchplay events, with the exception of the Father Pat Dunne mixed, has been complete and the presentation night is being currently arranged. Next Sunday sees the rescheduled running of the Expert Men's singles and the electronic time sheet is fast filling.

Course Drainage

Compliments to the committee in their initiative in engaging a competent contractor, when the window of opportunity presented itself over the past couple of weeks, to complete some vital and intensive drainage on the course which showed very necessary after the past three years' awful weather. The thousands of yards of sand slitting will surely prove worthwhile as we go forward.

Men's Seniors

The men's seniors competitions under the captaincy of Mick Duffy are up and running every Tuesday.

Last week saw a smallish turnout due to the awful weather for a lot of the day, however some hardy annuals competed.

The results will be relayed next week.

Turkeys and Men's Winter League

Members are advised to check notices regarding upcoming turkey competitions and the revamped Morgan Sports and Golf winter league, which this year should attract a lot of interest with the new format.

Ladies' Branch

Past Presidents of the I.L.G.U. sponsor competition.

Two of Mullingar's most respected members came together to sponsor last weeks competition. Past Presidents of the Irish Ladies Golf Union Ita Wallace and Cathy Smith have brought enormous honour to the club holding their prestigious positions in 1981 - '82 and 2001 - '02 respectively. Players were out in force making every effort to feature in the shake up. It turned out to be a tale of three 32 points scores, as first, second and third had to be separated by a countback. Best of the three was Ger Egan. Second place went to Jill Hegarty and third to Liz Armstrong. Delighted to feature in gross position was Patience Collier with 21 points.

Results: 1st, Ger Egan (17), 32 points; 2nd, Jill Hegarty (25), 32 points. Gross, Patience Collier (12), 21 points; 3rd, Liz Armstrong (26), 32 points

Christmas Hamper

There was great activity on the course from early morning on Sunday for the Christmas Hamper, the Club's last major of the year and the final 18 hole event of the season. Sponsored by the Ulster Bank and the Ladies Branch, the day started out pretty miserably with a pall of misty rain enveloping a sodden course. However it was not long before the rain gave way to blue skies and a brisk autumnal breeze. A glance about the course revealed some players in waterproofs and layers whilst the warmblooded amongst them went bare-armed and carefree.

The reward for good golf would ensure a Christmas feast while those who missed crucial putts might go hungry.

Kay Browne produced the round of the day scoring a magnificent score of 40 points in difficult conditions to win the day. Second spot went to Jeannette McDonnell with 38 points. Mary McCauley won the gross with 22 points from Lucy Tormey. Ann Bennett was clear from the rest of the field in third place with 36 points. Categories 1, 2 and 3 were won by Ann Grehan (14), Ber Chambers (27) and Martha Reynolds (29) with scores of 34, 35 and 34 points respectively.

Doreen Casey (19) was the best in the senior category with 32 points. Nora McCormack (19) pipped Jill Hegarty for the best front nine with 20 points. Carmel Maher suffered the same experience pipped by Dorothy O'Keeffe (14) who also shot 20 points to win the back nine. The Beginner 9 hole was won by Patricia Gardner and the Junior 18 went to Sinead Nolan.

Results: 1st, Kay Browne (22), 40 points; 2nd, Jeannette McDonnell (18), 38 points. Gross, Mary McCauley (12), 22 points; 3rd, Ann Bennett (14), 36 points.
