Connor Smith in Watford garb

Smith joins Stevenage from Hornets

Delvin man and Mullingar Athletic alumnus Connor Smith has joined Teddy Sheringham’s Stevenage on a month’s loan from Watford.

The midfielder, who spent part of last season on loan at Gillingham, has signed for the League 2 side on a month’s loan and is eager to get some game time under his belt. While he has enjoyed training with the likes of Etienne Capoue and Valon Bahrami, he says first team football is what he needs at this stage in his career.

“They have got Etienne Capoue, Valon Bahrami, Ben Watson, they are top, top players. It’s going to be hard. It’s difficult to get game time with the type of players you have got there,” he told the Hertfordshire Mercury.

“Capoue has been at Tottenham, Baromi has been at West Ham, it’s difficult to break into a team like that. When you are training with that type of player, especially in your position, you try and take on board everything they do, how they play. I think I have improved since they have come just by training with them.

“You could tell the amount of players that came in that a loan was going to be the best option.” Smith made his debut last Saturday in Stevenage’s 2-1 home victory against Plymouth Argyle. He says he is looking forward to playing for former England striker Sheringham.

“I know what he [Teddy Sheringham] was like as a player so hopefully we can get the ball down and play some good football. If I can do well it will make Watford think I can progress there. It’s good for everyone if I’m doing well here,” Smith said.
