Open air cinema event planned for Town Park

It worked during the depths of winter, so why not have an open air cinema in the setting of Mullingar Town Park during, what’s hoped, will be blissfully warm summer evenings?

That’s the question Stuart Montgomery, the organiser of Mullingar Christmas Market, is asking.

Over 1,000 people have shown a keen interested in a new Facebook page, Mullingar Outdoor Summer Cinema, just 24 hours after it was set up.

If it get’s the green light, screenings of movie favourites, from Dirty Dancing to cult film classics, will be shown. But it is all very much up to what the public would like to see.

“We’ve run the outdoor cinema at the Christmas Market and people loved it. Why not bring it to Mullingar when the weather is that bit better,” Stuart tells the Westmeath Examiner.

“I know music events worked really well there in the past. Maybe this could be the start of something new going into the future.”

Mullingar Outdoor Summer Cinema would be a full open air cinema experience, with popcorn sellers and local food producers, and while Stuart and his team have their own ideas on what would films would work, it is very much up to the public to decide what they would like to see.

“We’re planning on holding polls on the Facebook page so people can vote on what they’d like to see.”
