No ‘current recorded’ cases of Covid-19 in Kilbeggan plant

Meat Industry Ireland (MII) is stressing the importance of turning around Covid-19 test results in less than 24 hours.

Its representatives are making the statement to the Oireachtas Special Committee on Covid-19 Response today.

It follows the closing of meat plants in Offaly, Laois and Kildare due to an outbreak of the virus.

Restrictions were applied to those counties because more than 90 per cent of workers at the plants live in these counties.

As a result, cases of the virus were recorded in Birr, Ferbane, Clara, Tullamore, Edenderry, Maynooth, Clane, Newbridge, Athy, Durrow and Abbeyleix in recent days.

That’s according to acting chief medical officer, Ronan Glynn, who was speaking at a briefing of the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) on Wednesday.

Here in Westmeath, a source at Dawn Meats in Kilbeggan, says there are ”no current recorded cases” at the plant.
