Shared cycle and footpath planned for Ardmore Road

Westmeath County Council plan to construct a shared cycleway and footpath along the Ardmore Road in Mullingar, it was confirmed this week.

The works proposed will extend over a distance of almost a kilometre (872 metres) from 15 metres east of Saunders Bridge to 70 metres west of Curraghmore National School.

On the north side of the Ardmore Road, proposed works include a three-metre-wide shared cycleway and footpath, while on the south side, a two-metre-wide pedestrian footpath along the entire length of this scheme is planned.

The council points out that proposed development is located just east of two protected structures – Saunders Bridge and the Railway Bridge.

Pat Keating, district manager of Mullingar Municipal District, says the proposed scheme has undergone Appropriate Assessment Screening under the Habitats Directive and screening for Environmental Impact Assessment under the EIA Directive.

Members of the public now have the opportunity to make submissions to An Bord Pleanála over the plans for the proposed works.

Plans and particulars of the development are available for inspection on the Westmeath County Council website at consult.westmeathcoco.ie/en until Tuesday December 22.
