Remembrance Tree on Dominic Square opens next week

The Remembrance Tree on Dominic Square plays its part in comforting people who have lost loved ones. The people who volunteer at the tree hear many stories at the tree – the young child who has lost a grandparent, the teenager who has lost a parent, the elderly person who has lost a sibling – the list goes on.

The Remembrance Tree gets you to slow down, take time-out and remember your loved ones in what is otherwise a busy period of the year.

Writing a message on the ribbon is a simple, yet moving, experience for many.

By donating something at the tree, people also help to comfort others at Christmas and into the new year and beyond. The funds collected are divided between North Westmeath Hospice and Mullingar Rotary club. In that way donations are distributed widely to local causes which help to ease the burden of life for those people who have to endure more than their fair share.

At the tree people can make cash donations or tap bank cards on the terminal provided.

A spokesperson for North Westmeath Hospice and Mullingar Rotary club said: “We sincerely appreciate the help we get from our sponsors. There is a considerable cost in setting up and running the Remembrance Tree over the Christmas period, and our sponsors greatly assist in keeping those expenses down – from the biodegradable ribbon sponsored by Teresa Nixon’s florist, to the hand-sanitising station donated by Oliver Foley in Canore and everything in between.

“The importance of your donation is crucial towards easing the burden on those who are having it difficult in these extraordinary tough times.

“We are all aware that the Covid-19 virus is still prevalent and all of the committee members will be adhering to all current public health guidelines to ensure the utmost safety to everyone.

“All those working on behalf of North Westmeath Hospice and Rotary club Mullingar wish you a very happy Christmas and a safe and prosperous new year.”
