The Mullingar Scratch Trophy – 60 years and counting!

This year’s hosting of the Mullingar Scratch Trophy by Mullingar Golf Club marks the club’s 60th consecutive staging of the trophy which is once again sponsored by Sherry Fitzgerald Davitt & Davitt and Pinergy.

The event will take place over Sunday 31st July and Monday 1st August 2022 and will be preceded by a practice round for competitors on Saturday 30th July. Designed to showcase Mullingar Golf Club from its inaugural event in 1963, it continues to attract the best amateurs of the day and has established itself as the most prestigious Scratch Trophy event in the country.

This demanding competition comprises of four rounds of Stroke Play of 36 holes with the top 51 players qualifying for the final two rounds. With Bridgestone Order of Merit points on offer, it saw the list of in excess of 200 entrants being cut to 90 qualifiers.

The Bridgestone Order of Merit comprises 10 men’s and 11 women’s events with the leading three players on the men’s tour and the top finisher on the women’s tour guaranteed places on Ireland’s Home Internationals teams. The top-three players on the Men’s Bridgestone Tour at the end of the season will also be guaranteed their spots on the 2023 Golf Ireland High Performance panel. Mullingar Scratch Trophy is the penultimate Bridgestone event for this year and as such is one of the last opportunities for competitors to secure Order of Merit points for this season.

The roll of past winners in the Mullingar Scratch Trophy reads as a veritable who’s who of the greats of Irish amateur golf, plus some brilliant overseas players. The first three winners were J.B. Carr, Tom Craddock and Peter Townsend (the first man to successfully defend the Scratch Trophy). Many of our winners have gone on to achieve worldwide success in the professional ranks, among them Des Smyth, Philip Walton, Peter Lawrie, Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley, Padraig Harrington, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry.

This year three local players, Adam Smith, Mikey Mina Ronayne and Patrick Davitt Jnr made the draw and the club wishes them the very best in their endeavors to capture the prestige title of winner of the Mullingar Scratch Trophy 2022.

The Mullingar Scratch Trophy could not proceed without the generous sponsorship of Sherry Fitzgerald Davitt & Davitt and Pinergy, and the club thanks them for their continued support. The club also thanks Mullingar Scratch Trophy Committee Chairman Andrew Maslin, his team and Golf Ireland for all their hard work in this endeavour.

Finally, a very special thank you to local man and comedian Conor Moore for launching and promoting the event on his social media channels. For anyone interested in following the progress of the competitors live scoring and news will be available throughout the championship at www.golfnet.ie. Spectators are once again most welcome on the course throughout the competition.
